The History of Burberry Bags
The Burberry bag started more than 100 years ago in Basingstoke, England, when Thomas Burberry opened a shop that featured his trademarked fabric, gabardine. Gabardine was special, a true discovery, because it was waterproofed twice, tightly woven, and resistant to tearing - though still comfortable to wear and beautiful to look at. This fabric, later to be used in the creation of Burberry bags, was Burberry's ticket to success.
This ticket bought Thomas Burberry a ride on a train to worldwide fame. Because his fabric was so ingenious and original, the War Office of Britain contracted with him to create an officer's raincoat. Burberry's design was approved by King Edward VII and became standard as a part of the service uniform of all British officers. This design leaked into the general population and Burberry modified it to include a buttoned flap to keep out the wind, storm pockets, D rings, cuffs with adjustable buckles, and epaulets to become the famous trench coat that is still popular all over the world.
What about that famous checked or plaid design on the gabardine fabric that is synonymous with Burberry bags and accessories? It was first used as a lining in one of the trench coats in the early 1920s. When Hollywood took it to the big screen, there was no stopping Burberry. He was a legend in his own time.
