Burberry Purses

The traditional Burberry tartan or plaid has long epitomized class and taste. No one does the trench coat quite like Burberry, but a Burberry trench coat match with Burberry purses creates a sleek, classy look that makes an impression.

History

The founder of Burberry, Thomas Burberry, is native to Dorking Surrey in England. He was born in 1835 and received his foundational design training as an apprentice to a draper. T. Burberry and Sons was his first business, a drapery business, which he opened in Basingstoke, Hampshire in 1856. It was here that the beginnings of the Burberry plaid found in today's Burberry purses took shape.

The cloth that Burberry produced in collaboration with a cotton mill owner was waterproof and closely woven – the same fabric used in Burberry purses today. He took this fabric and trademarked it as “gabardine” in 1902 after making the big move to London in 1891. His first business in the big city was wholesale with a specialty of creating sporty, comfortable leisure clothes from his gabardine. In 1909, Burberry registered his name as the trademark for his soon to be signature coats – and Burberry purses – recognized around the world.

Though there are no Burberry purses for men, during World War I the Burberry trench coat was the thing to wear for men of the British Royal Flying Corps. Characterized by a deep rear yoke, epaulets, cuff straps with buckles and a flap that buttons down, the only thing missing was a Burberry man’s purse!
